Yo and behold – Iron Patriot spangles up proceedings in Iron Man 3. These on-set shots from the new Avengers movie (already in production – good work Marvel!!) reveal a very starry eyed surprise for one Mr Anthony Stark. Interesting choice of Bad Guy that might’ve suggested that yet again, the Mandarin has been put on the back-burner for the new movie. But no…
While Ben Kingsley and Guy Pearce have already been confirmed to take on nemesis roles in the upcoming film, it seems that there is another villainous character on the scene.
The discovery of Iron Patriot as a potential third villain (played by James Badge Dale) suggests things might be getting a little crowded on set for part 3. Considering that no comicx book adaptation with more than one full-on super villain has ever truly worked it seems like a weird gambit on Marvel’s behalf but if anyone’s gonna pull it off… watch this space.

Pretty much all of this footage has long since been seen as a TV Spot and various previews but this is what the Japanese got months ago as a standard trailer for the Avengers movie. Leaning a little more heavily on the tech – with some lingering shots of the Shield carrier doing it’s thing the whole thing starts with a revealing look at the invaders coming out of a wibbly wormhole. Not much more of a fanfare was really needed for Avengers in the west but Marvel and Disney can expect some smaller, yellower bums on seats in the Far East based on this promo. Interesting to see if there’s another before Japan’s release in a few month’s time. Sorry about the description of possible appearance of bums in Japan. I’ve never seen a Japanese ass. Sorry again.
Looking forwards to watching The Avengers in a couple of months? Well you can’t. But, thanks to a last minute name change, you CAN go and see Avengers Assemble.
Disney announced today that due to the existence of the iconic 60s TV show of the same name (as well as the somewhat less iconic movie), they’re changing the UK title of their upcoming super team up movie. So far as we know the film will still be called “The Avengers” around the rest of the world, but we Brits just can’t be trusted to not get confused.
Disney also released a new poster which sticks to their central marketing strategy of reminding everybody that Robert Downey Jr. is in the film. Were it not being heralded as genuine by all the news outlets I’d be calling fake on it as the photoshopping of some of the characters is kinda dodgy (Hawkeye seems to be trying to do some sort of weird, backwards, Michael Jackson leaning thing) but I guess they can’t all be perfect.
Alright, you can stop checking the internet every day, the Official Trailer for Avengers is finally here. For all their faults there are still no other movies that make me cheer during trailers in the way that Marvel movies do. What can we infer from the trailer? Loki is a badass, Thor has a new outfit and Robert Downey Jr should be in every film.
Avengers is released in 2012.
I don’t normally post news stories like this, but this is too much of a giggle not to bring up. According to sources on the Avengers set Robert Downey Jr accidentally punched Scarlett Johansson in the face last week because he “pressed the wrong button” on his Iron Man suit.
Downey Jr was waiting to film a scene for the movie and decided to have a fiddle with some of the buttons on his suit, it turns out that his wandering fingers landed on the switch that controls his arm, causing it to swing round and catch his co-star in the face, knocking her off the stage. Fortunately Johansson was not badly hurt and was apparently able to laugh off the incident.
According to the source Downey Jr was apparently somewhat sheepish about the incident: “Robert, who couldn”t help because he literally can”t move in that iron suit, was beside himself – he kept apologizing and saying, Oh, my God, I”m so sorry!”
Avengers is out next year.
The Avengers line-up has a slightly lesser known character being played by an actress more famous for TV roles. Cobie Smulders of ‘How I Met Your Mother’ (no we don’t either) will be taking up the position of former Head of Shield and all round tough momma Maria Hill. Smulders was reportedly up for the role of Wonder Woman but will now join WW helmer and Marvel (Astounding X-Men) veteran Joss Whedon on the Avengers movie. Given Whedon’s history with high kicking femme fatales (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly) its looking likely that potentially perennial characters such as Maria Hill and Black Widow will get considerable screen time. Good news for the teenage fans and good news most probably for the budget.
This completes the already impressive cast line-up of Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Samuel L Jackson, Scarlett Johansson and Chris Hemsworth as Iron Man, Captain America, Nick Fury, Black Widow and Thor respectively.
This with the added power of lesser known but credible choices Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk and ‘Hurt Locker’s’ Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye.
According to Variety, Smulders has signed on for nine films, including ‘Avengers’ as well as the chapters leading up to it and following such as Iron Man’, ‘Captain America’ and ‘Thor’ etc. The scale of this is incredible. Marvel are forming franchises within franchises and all evidence so far suggests there’s reason to be very excited.
We will keep you posted.
