“The Return” A webcomic by Dan Thompson and Jake Rowlingson

While Steve’s busily working on Moon 3, I’ve been doing a couple of side projects with the Unseen Shadows guys. The first of these to come out is a one page webcomic called “The Return.”

Bob Kelsey is the tragedy prone freelance journalist of Barry Nugent’s fantasy series and Barry asked a few of us if we’d like to do some short strips about Bob’s tribulations. I drew upon my own battles with terrifying monsters and created this spine chilling tale that was then beautifully illustrated by Jake Rowlingson. Hope you enjoy it.

Neil deGrasse Tyson’s most astounding fact adapted as a comic

We’ve already seen a video interpretation of physicist Neil deGrasse Tyson’s most astounding fact about the universe in Dan’s weekly Dropping Science post. Cartoonist Gavin Aung Than offers his graphic version of the famous quote, illustrating it in a single, beautiful webcomic.

Than’s comic is below, you can see the whole thing and others at his webcomic Zen Pencils. In Zen Pencils, Than takes various inspirational quotes and illustrates comics around them. This one, inspired in part by the film The Tree of Life has a similar tone to the video version of the quote we’ve seen before. But many of Than interpretations are less expected. He uses the Bene Gesserit “Litany Against Fear” from Frank Herbert’s Dune as the text for a story about escaping an abusive relationship. He also does charming turns with quotes from Ayn Rand, Carl Sagan, and Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell.

Welcome to Beyond The Bunker!

Hi chaps,

We’ve just returned from an incredibly successful weekend at the London Super Comic Convention. We met a tonne of lovely people and many of you bought a copy of Moon, so I thought I’d take a second to say hi to all our new followers and show you around the site a little bit.

I’m Dan, I wrote Moon. You can find my bio HERE!

Steve drew Moon (and lots of other stuff). You can read all about him HERE and hire him for commissions HERE!

If you want to find out what the Moon comic is all about you can find up to date news HERE and a trailer/blurb HERE!

If you want to buy any of our comics (either in print or digitally) then you can do so HERE!

Steve and I are heavily involved in the Unseen Shadows line of books and you can read about them HERE!

You might have noticed that we make films as well. You can find all of them on the menu at the top or by clicking HERE!

We try to update the site almost every day so we have a whole bumload of other features and articles for when we don’t have any Moon or FH news to tell you about. Here’s a few of them that you might want to check out:

THE PRACTITIONERS is a weekly blog by Steve which looks back over the careers of some of the most influential people in the comics industry. There are over 30 articles on there already so you’ve got plenty of reading to do. There will be a test at the end. I’d suggest using the menu at the top to navigate them so it doesn’t become too overwhelming! (hint: The Jeph Loeb one is very entertaining)

THE EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURES OF MONSIEUR POPPALEUX is a weekly clipart webcomic which is honestly not written by me (honest) but rather by the famous 90′s children’s author and cat strangler, Dr Jean-François Bacharach. It’s about a maladjusted smiley face and a pie chart who lies. It’s finished now, but the archives are still there if you feel the need to never sleep well again.

On top of all this both STEVE and MYSELF both have blogs here and we often write articles about COMICSFILMSand GAMES.

Finally, you should follow ME, and BEYOND THE BUNKER on twitter and like us on facebook.

Given how many books we’ve sold to children as of late I should take a moment to say that we are trying to keep the site as kid friendly as we can, but bear in mind that certain parts of it (the films and Monsieur Poppaleux in particular) are intended for an older audience.

Phew! What a lot of links. Well that should give you plenty of stuff to keep you busy for a while. Please pop us on your bookmarks bar and check in every day to see what’s new and be sure to drop us a message and let us know what you think of the book and the site. You guys really are the backbone of this whole endeavour and it’s honestly very humbling to see how much interest you all take in what we do.

Welcome to Beyond The Bunker.

The Extraordinary Tales of Monsieur Poppaleux #31 – We Are What We Are

In 1993, famous Belgian author and spring onion connoisseur, Dr Jean-François Bacharach created a series of books for children. The aim of the project was to use state of the art digital technology to educate and inform on a wide range of topics from maths and theology to poetry and tennis. Using pioneering clip-art techniques, he produced a staggering portfolio of work that continues to be widely distributed in schools across the world and Belgium. Sadly DrBacharach himself was eventually imprisoned due to his being ahead of his time and because he killed a quite staggering number of cats. However his work lives on here at the Bunker! We have secured the entirety of Dr Bacharach’s monumental work and now present it to you. C’est formidable!

The Extraordinary Tales of Monsieur Poppaleux #24 – Damn You Auto-Correct!

ATTENTION! It has come to the attention of the Jean-François Bacharach memorial fund, that certain copies of The Extraordinary Tales of Monsieur Poppaleux may have contained printing errors. While only minor in nature, it is possible that these errors could lead to a tainted reading of  Dr Bacharach’s work. We apologise for the misprint and are now happy to present you with the correct version of the comic. Rest assured that changes have been implemented in our publishing department to ensure such errors do not occur again. C’est bob.
